Welcome to the The BackShop.

We are in the process of developing a new ecommerce presence and anticipate that the About Us page will evolve as we step through the development process.

We started installing decoders for our local club in 2002, registered our first domain name in early 2003 and began the process of forming our business. The inspiration for the business name came from a Rail Fan trip to The Spencer Shops in North Carolina. We were standing next to the Back Shop building (un-restored at that time) which is depicted in our logo picture. Looking through the broken windows at the massive crane assembly over the erecting tracks within, we were awestruck with both the magnitude and scope of the repairs that had most certainly been performed in that facility during its service life. While standing there marveling at this derelict building, it occurred to us that there was a connection with that service facility and the scope of our miniaturized scale bench repairs on brass locomotives as well as our decoder installation business. To compare our enterprise to that original facility is unjust to the rich history of the men and machines involved in 19th century locomotive repair. Yet it was out of our admiration and respect for that very history of locomotive maintenance and repair that we were inspired to name the business in the same simple terms that were used at Spencer. Our business goal is to provide the same level of pride, quality and integrity to our customers as the 19th century craftsmen of this historical facility provided to the railroad they served.

To this end we put quality and service first. While service is at the forefront of our efforts, 21st century technology changes at a pace that provides logistical challenges. To ensure that our customers receive the most current technologies we frequently have to special order or actually create custom configurations to suit the challenges that present themselves. Circumstances such as this require time and effort that can delay the process but quality always comes first. We want satisfied customers. If you lack the patience that is required to achieve the kind of solutions we are striving to provide, we suggest that you seek another service provider. Please understand that we want your business but not at the cost of a compromised solution! Please refer to our Refund and Returns Policies for details on our Customer Satisfaction and Money Back Guaranties on all service work should you have any questions regarding our dedication to the ideals outlined above.

If you are in the vicinity of Spencer, do yourself a favor and pay a visit to her shop. It is located directly across the street from the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer. Her collection of railroad related prints and artwork is well worth a visit as is the Museum and related attractions in this historical district.
